The Alexander Newski cathedral is the most famous landmark of this 1,2 million populated city, and since the fall of the communist regime also a symbol of freedom for this country.
The cathedral, built between 1896-1912 and dedicated to the Russian saint Alexander Newski, was erected in honour and gratitude to the Russians for their assistance in the war Bulgaria fought against the Ottoman Empire.

Another attraction and equally famous landmark of the Bulgarian capitol is the St. Sophia statue erected more recently in 2000. This 24 metre high bronze created by the Bugarian artist George Chapkanov replaces the statue of Lenin and represents the patron saint of the city.
